“When in Rome, do like the Romans”… I go by that saying every time I’m on holiday abroad, whether it’s dining at the finest local cuisine, to dressing like the locals do or simply just living the lifestyle! I’ve been asked by Smarting – a language translation software company to share my “Dream Night Abroad”, what I would wear, what I would do, what I would eat and most importantly how I would communicate with the locals if there a language barrier. As I’m off to Santorini, Greece in October I can actually give you guys an insight as to how my holiday would go and how I would fit in with the locals. For those who don’t know Santorini is an island in Greece. The island is full of beautiful features, with white-painted architecture villages over looking the sea, perfect for romantic getaways or simply a relaxation getaways.
One day is certainly not enough to explore the beauty of Santorini, you need at least 7-10 days to get the full taste of Santorini and I’ve been told October is one of the best times to go for the sightseeing, views, wineries, and food when there’s not a lot of tourists (in other words less people to queue up).
Santorini is famously known for its fine wines so it’s only right that after enjoying a wine tasting cuisine at Nea Kameni Volcano, that I drink the Greek way by sitting at a tavern by the waves sipping on some Ouzo. Ouzo is a local strong drink similar to French Pastis that can be mixed with water (and it turns milky) or fruity juice (for a fruity flavour)… With that done, dressed in my evening stylish outfit I will visit one of the local restaurant and do what I do best… eat some good food!! My ideal Meze (starter) would be Saganaki which is a fried/grilled cheese with Tzatziki (a yoghurt, cucumber & garlic dip). Once that’s dealt with I will then move on to the main course of fresh sea food which are one of the most expensive dishes on the menu, but I wouldn’t mind paying a few extra euro for a good Calamari, Astokos (lobster), or Barbounia (red mullet) dish. For dessert… Who needs dessert after devouring a delicious meal of fresh sea food, but just because I’m in Santorini I have to try the local dessert! I will love me some Baklava and Bougatsa (flaky pastry with cream and cinnamon filling) yummy!
As for the languages barrier, I think that would be easy to overcome. These days we have many different technologies that can help with this, such as different language software/Apps such as Smartling. “Smartling’s mission is to make the world’s content multilingual. By putting the entire translation workflow in the cloud, Smartling enables businesses to reach global markets more quickly, more accurately, and more cost-effectively than ever before. If in the doubt Smartling will be ready to rescue you or go pay a visit to the good ol’ Google! Bacis greek phrases I know are:“ya su” – hello, “pos íse?” – how are you?, kalá íme, efharistó. Esí? – I’m fine thank you, Kaliméra su – good morning, Yiá sou -goodbye, stin iyá mas! – cheers! etc.
I opted for this black crossed back strapped jumpsuit because I love black! and I think the style of the jumpsuit is perfect for an island like santroni as its classy and elegant, it’s also great for the weather!
